First Aid is the treatment given
to a person before a doctor arrives. Many precious lives have been lost
consequent of not receiving First Aid. The main objectives of First Aid are:
- To preserve lives.
- To promote recovery.
- To prevent worsening of the condition.
- To take the injured to a safer place where professionals can look after him/her.
Interestingly First Aid can be
done by anybody and anywhere. However, one should be aware of First Aid methods
for specific situations. I doubt if there is anybody (above age 20) who has not
come across an accident (domestic, auto crash e.t.c.) victim in need of urgent
help pending the arrival of health professional(s).
There have been cases of people
weeping and watching accident victims helplessly without a clue of how to help
the situation. There have also been cases of good Samaritans trying their best,
innocently, to help accident victims but ended up compounding the woes of the
victims. This means that knowledge of First Aid is of paramount importance to
everyone.
